Bayswater School offers specialist tuition for students whose first language is not English.

Rhonwen Dewar, the school's ESOL teacher, assesses all eligible students for Ministry of Education funding before meeting with each child's teacher to develop and deliver individually tailored English language programmes.

She also works closely with the students' families, bringing them together in a social setting during the school day to facilitate friendships as well as provide them with an insight into the important elements of their child's learning programme. Through these sessions staff also learn about the educational expectations and backgrounds of their ESOL students, facilitating an improved learning pathway for all concerned.

We are lucky to have children from many different nationalities at Bayswater School.
Some of these countries include: Japan, Malaysia, Samoa, Tonga, Iraq, Chile, China, Korea, England, India, Philippines, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary and Germany.
Meet some of our new students and learn a bit about them. These photographs show you where their families come from. Their stories tell you about why they came to New Zealand and the challenges they face living here.

Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a different culture and speak a different language? Make sure you support them as much as possible in the classroom and in the playground. You can make an important difference to their lives, and your life, by building a friendship.
